Lesson 2
Welcome to Lesson 2 of “WRITE THROUGH IT,” the easiest little writing workshop ever. If you missed Lesson 1, start here.
RHYMING LINES
Rhyming is a tradition in poetry and song.
It makes words easier for most people to memorize, increasing the likelihood that information will be remembered, shared, and passed down.
HERE IS AN EXAMPLE BY SHEL SILVERSTEIN:
the romance
Said the pelican to the elephant,
“I think we should marry, I do.
’Cause there’s no name that rhymes with me,
And no one else rhymes with you.”
Said the elephant to the pelican,
“There’s sense to what you’ve said,
For rhyming’s as good a reason as any
For any two to wed.”
And so the elephant wed the pelican,
And they dined upon lemons and limes,
And now they have a baby pelicant,
And everybody rhymes.
What will you say if your lines must rhyme?
Will you write about life or love or time?
Are you ready to grow?
Write a rhyming poem using the prompt below
(or share your own).
Keep it as short or as long as you wish.
IT’S GOOD TO BE ME
Need HELP GETTING STARTED?
What do I love most about my life?
Why would someone else enjoy being me?
What makes me unique?
PLEASE SHARE YOUR WORDS.
Post your RHYMING LINES in the comments or in the form below. Encourage your kids, partner, or co-workers to play along.
SUBMISSIONS WILL BE POSTED TO THE BOTTOM OF THIS PAGE.
Your Submissions:
Light and bright,
I’m hardly uptight.
Positive and fun,
I’ll walk rather than run.
A friend and mentor,
living in gratitude, I’m not the inventor.
It’s good to be me,
I like what I see.

I have a lot of love.
I feel blessed from above.
In peace, like a dove.
No lack thereof.

My little honeybees
In my heart I strive
for a home that’s vibrant and alive
with others who thrive
in our own little hive -
and some of them call me mom.

Always running from what you don’t want,
it’s hard to know what you do.
You can’t dream a better way
while dragging the past behind you -
not after all you’ve been through.
